  1. Bojan Tunguz says:

I have been using mobile pocket devices for almost a decade (Palm Pilot, iPod touch, iPhone), and most of them have screens that scratch relatively easily, hence the need for a protective screen. Screens, however, tend to be exceedingly hard to apply, and this one from Amazon is no exception. However, Amazon has gone the farthest as far as helping users apply the screen to their device with a few small improvements. The most significant of those are the two “masks” that are attached to the back and front of these protective films – one to be removed before the application, and one after. They help prevent accidental smudges on the film during the application process. The application process, however, is still exceedingly frustrating. It is very hard to align the protective film with the device screen, and even the smallest speck of dust that gets caught between the film and the screen can create air bubbles that give the whole screen and unappealing appearance. Once you get it applied though, the screen is as functional and effective as they come. The film feels good to the touch and has significantly reduced glare. My only objection is that the whole around the home button on the front could have been a tad bit larger.

This product comes in Amazon’s “frustration free” packaging, which was indeed very easy to open, albeit not exactly frustration-free. The cardboard that the packaging was made out was flimsy and that tab that needed to be ripped in order to open the package sort of broke of. Nonetheless, the very flimsiness of the packaging made it very easy to rip apart and open even without the use of the tab.

  2. UPDATE: I have revised my rating based on a tip from another reviewer.

It turns out that the situation I encountered (see below about “label 2″) was based on a error in the application instructions. The screen protector turns out to be sandwiched between TWO sheets of protective plastic. The second label is attached to a protective sheet, and pulling it is intended to remove that second sheet–not merely the label itself.

With the second sheet removed, the product now performs as intended. I am upgrading my rating from one star to four stars, deducting one star because of the incomplete instructions.

    **********

An iPhone screen protector needs to be optically clear and “sacrificial” in the sense that it takes the scratches and gouges that you’d rather not find on the glass touch surface itself. Amazon’s “AmazonBasics” package should answer to that description nicely. In “frustration-free packaging,” the pack consists of three screen protector sets in a plastic envelope; a microfiber screen cleaner; a plastic “squeegee”; and a small illustrated instruction leaflet.

IF it worked as suggested, one performs the following steps:

    * Clean and polish the screen with the microfiber cloth.

    * Remove the film from the “screen down” side of the protector by pulling on a label affixed to it.

    * Align the protector at top or bottom edge of the iPhone screen, and use the squeegee to chase bubbles out as you slowly lay it down. Use the second affixed label to do this without touching the adhesive.

    * Remove the second label when application is complete.

Everything works…up to to the last point. The adhesive backing label 2 (blue) is gummy and would not come off the protector along with the label itself. Result: a label-shaped patch in the upper-left corner of the iPhone screen that is still adhesive-sticky and is sure to attract dirt and lint.

I would rate the product 4 or 5 stars but for this defect, because the protector itself is clear and tough. My spouse says that the optical touchscreen is working again after applying this protector. But the problem with the adhesive label means I cannot recommend it until Amazon fixes it.
